Christians can agree on the essentials of the gospel and still disagree over personal convictions and preferences. In Romans 14:1–12, Paul challenges believers to stop making their personal preferences the standard for everyone else. While the church in Rome was getting sideways about what they could and couldn't eat and what days they needed to hold as special, we have our own lists of personal preferences today. For the sake of church unity, we must learn to distinguish essential beliefs clearly defined in God's Word from disputed matters where Scripture might not be clear one way or the other.
